Il Gran Premio dei Direttori Sportivi d’Italia
Some description text for this item
Known also as the “one lira” race and Italy’s Sporting Director Grand Prix, is a road cycling race for the Allievi category (15-16 years old) that takes place every year in Valsugana. The race was conceived and organized for the first time in 1965 by Carlo Dalla Torre. The first three editions took place in the cities of Avio, Preore and Trento.
In 1968 the race lands to its final home, Borgo Valsugana. The race did not take place only in 1969, 1976, 1977 and 2020.
The young athletes do not race for themselves but for their sporting director instead, who coach them throughout the whole season and are finally awarded and are the focus of the day, for one race a year. The prize once consisted in a symbolic “one lira” coin but in the last years, due to the limited availability of liras, it has been substituted with a 10 cents coin.
